The world as decribed has any number of factions. The northern grasslands, held by the rebellious slaves, broke down into internecine squabbling and independent city-states. They are raided from the islanders to the north, and equally from the neogi to the south; it's a dangerous place, filled with madness.

The eastern jungles defy any attempts at unification: the small tribes have lived in their ways for centuries and show no real interest in improving their lot. It's a strongly traditional land.

The mountains that form the backbone of the world are torn between the neogi conquerors, and the handful of dwarves who remain independent. Some dwarven cities have capitulated to their insectioid overlords.

In the west, refugees from the grasslands have come into the middle of the perpetual low-grade conflicts between the two native types: the human nomads, who roam the plains, and the fey who serve the Jackal Princes.

The south is perhaps the most pleasant of places to live: the rump area of the old Dwarven Empire, it has outlasted the rest of the empire in a manner akin to Byzantium's survival of the destruction of the Western Empire. Dwarves still live there, lording over the humans and ogrish types that farm the southern plains.
