C/Ped from LJ:
Good vs evil
A man stumbling in the dark is no better off than one blinded by his own light.
Good and evil are too abstact.
Selfish vs Society
The world revolves around me, or the world revolves around everyone else.
Perhaps possible religions/orders?
Those of the self, very devoted to personal improvment, making themselves the best, very self contained and independant. High mental resistance.
Can be either good or evil.
If they prefer praise and recognition they are likely to become heroes and do good.
If they prefer worship and power they tend to turn to paths of villany and do evil.
"I do it because I enjoy doing it, and if it saves the day at the same time, well all the better."
Those of the swarm, extremely devoted to others of the order, lost if isolated, strong empathy and telepathy, very vulnerable to mental attacks.
Individualy not as strong but can draw on others for strength.
The groups can be benign with a desire to just co-exist with the world and be one with their fellows and the surroundongs.
They can also go the way of the borg and focus on bringing new people in to increase their collective power.
"Our ranks swell, and we are the new order, the new face of humanity."
Perhaps have a land where some of the population has strong mental abilities instead of the usual 'magic'?
Possible story/setting idea
Gentic research facility working on gene therapy for "the betterment of mankind" is bombed by a "Pure human" group against genetic tinkering.
In reality the facility was just a cover for a biological weapon research program.
One of their main reserch projects was a virus designed to make a population docile and easily controlled.
(Ironicly, they dubbed it the Mind Controll virus)
Thir main cover project was a form of virus based gene therapy for improving mental capacity.
It is these two that are thought to be the main ones responsible to the changes in the survivors of the Great Plauge that resulted from this.
Typical apocolapse stuff...
Most of the world's population goes flush,
strange abilities start showing up in the decendants of the survivors.
(and possibly in a few of the survivors themselves)
Humanity settles back into some semblance of 'normal', with your typical squabbles.
Population tends to be seggrated between those who have these new abilities and those who don't.
(Pretty standard stuff there)
Main threat could be from a group set up like a hive.
Weaker willed individuals are drones and the stronger willed ones gain leadership positions where they dominate over those below them.
Head of group, exceptionally strong mentally, of unkown age.
(Actual survivor of the plauge, possible side effect in a few people could have been to make them nearly immortal in terms of aging)
((Sub note, perhaps the immorals are sterile - but only when they breed with non imortals - they can breed with each other - children are very unlikely to be immortal themsevles and the trait will skip generations - both parents must be ancestors of imortals - longevity is mainly a result of being immune to infection of all sorts.))
Inward structure of group is constant power struggle based on dominating others through force of will.
Group is gaining momentum fast, the more people they dominate and make part of the group, the more collective mental power they can focus on dominating new people. |

| Are there established nation-states, or free cities, or some other formal governments? Do the hive-minds have an external government structure, or is everything done through the mental collective. (There are some very interesting problems to be written about when you try to negotiate with a culture that is /all/ unspoken, unwritten laws that everyone in the cultures knows but doesn't bother communicating to others.) |

Ok I did some pondering last night and this morning and here is what I came up with ^_^
Lets go with mostly independent self governed settlements and towns.
There are a few groups though who bear mention.
The Hive group
Despotism via mental domination
Power hungry, this group was started by an individual (beleved to be immortal) who dominated the minds of those around him. As more and more people became dominated, he was able to pool the collective mental powers to dominate those less vulnerable to psyic controll. Another effect of the added minds was the emergance of a sort of hive mind for wich the founder served as the seed personality. This hive mind enabled him to dominate and controll far more people than he would have been able to on his own. Fortunatly the group was not able to explosively grow as those directly dominated were less able to dominate others, and those in turn were even less able. So in order to acheve a full lasting controll over someone, that individual still has to be brought into the presense of the founder. It is hoped that removing him would cause the whole structure to collapse as evidence has shown that when a higher 'ranking' member is killed it is likely to free all of those controlled under him.
The Pure human group
Governed by a small circle of fanatical leaders, if one of those dies they are replaced by a new person appointed by the surviving members of the circle.
In a bit of irony that serves to reinforce the Sufferers view that this is Hell, most of the group responsable for the inital disaster survived it. They now view the whole Plauge as their biggest mistake and belve in order to attone for their crime they must undo its effects and 'restore' hummanity to its untainted state. They have grown in size considerably from what they were when they triggered the disaster. Mostly by those people who are intimidated and feel thretened by those who have new powers.
The ageless
Democrcy (among those who are immortal)
We who are immortal are blessed and it is our duty to oversee those less fortunate. (Not really evil, but very self important, also non imortals in their society have no vote) Its not a very big group as most non-imortals tend to leave when they reach adulthood and immortal women are no more fertal than non-immortal. (Meaning that they have menopause like everyone else) This means that any given time the number of actual fertal women is a fairly small percentage of the population.
The gifted
No actual government in the normal sense of the word.
A self formed group consisting of those who have a gift for telepathy.
Any single individual in the group may speek for the entire group as they are all in constant contact. Indivduals still have their own personalities and thoughts, but they are aware of the thoughts of eveyone else in the group. This ability to communicate and act as a whole eliminates the need for any political organization, making it very confusing for outside groups to deal with them.
Scavangers
A general term applied to those living a more nomatic life. Mostly these people survive by exploring the ruins of cities for whatever they can find.
The Sufferers
A loosly organized collection of people who view that the apocolypase has come and those who were 'left behind' and didn't die in the plauge were all those condemmed to suffer in hell, wich is what they beleve this world to be. A very unpredictable group as a whole, although there is at least one faction of it devoted to the idea of seeking redemption through easing the tortures of being in 'hell'. |
